This laundry shop was located on the place Dauphine, between the Palais de Justice and the Pont Neuf, in Paris. Using careful line, the areas of light and shade in this drawing were carefully developed by Whistler. He was convinced that the drawing would transfer well and in a letter written to Thomas Way he referred to "what I fancy is perhaps the best drawing I have done" and continued to regard "The Laundress: La Blanchisseuse de la Place Dauphine" as being one of his best works in lithography. This lithograph was printed by Thomas Way. (See also GLAHA 49077/49361-49364/49672/49783).
