Description: | Two ms diaries (26pp and 69pp) with a ts transcription (55pp), ms letters (5pp) and papers (12pp) covering his military service as a NCO with the 1/16th Battalion London Regiment (The Queen’s Westminster Rifles) (169th Brigade, 56th Division) on the Western Front, 1916 - 1917, describing his embarkation on the VIPER and arrival at Rouen (16 August 1916), visiting a training school, the journey to St Amand (19 August 1916), the food, his comrades and duties, the various camps and billets as they marched to Dombast (21 - 23 August 1916) where he describes the training he underwent and the tank trials, the move to Death Valley (7 September 1916) describing the conditions of the trenches and the wait to receive news on how his battalion fared going ‘over the top’, the journey to Fosse (21 – 29 October 1916), Christmas celebrations, the march to Achicourt (1 – 14 March 1917), where he comments on the fighting and his wounding and subsequent blinding by shrapnel to the face, his arrival at St John’s Hospital, Etaples (4 May 1917) and his discharge (17 December 1917). The collection includes two photograph albums (containing 226 images) showing him in uniform and with his family.
