Description: | Well written ts diary (131pp) recording his career as an officer with the Royal Artillery on the Western Front, November 1915 - December 1917, including: embarkation overseas from Southampton (November 1915); active service with C Battery, 149th Brigade RFA (30th Division) in France and Belgium (November 1915 - November 1916, when he was invalided home, and July - December 1917), notably on the Somme (January - August and September - October 1916) and in Flanders (July - December 1917), until he was killed in action in January 1918; and commenting on the conditions; his duties as a Forward Observation Officer; the continuous shelling; his off-duty recreation; the preparations for and assault on the first day of the Battle of the Somme (1 July 1916); the staff; American and French troops; the heavy losses; tanks. Also included are two photographs of him in uniform and one of his grave, a facsimile of his ms letter (6pp) to his brother, January 1916, and four letters of condolence (3pp) from fellow officers to his father, January 1918.
