Description: | 5 ms diaries (31pp, 51pp, 74pp, 83pp and 64pp) written during his service on the Western Front as an officer with the 76th and 61st Brigades RFA (Guards Division), November 1915 - November 1916, and the 75th Brigade RFA (Guards Division), December 1916 - November 1918, describing his embarkation to France, his first experience of trench warfare in the Neuve Chapelle sector, his duties and movements, fraternisation with the Germans on Christmas Day 1915, periods of leave back in the United Kingdom, involvement in the Battle of the Somme, especially the fighting around Ginchy and Guillemont in September - October 1916, the Battle of Messines (June 1917) and the Third Battle of Ypres (July - September 1917), his wounding and evacuation back to hospital in the UK (October - November 1917), his return to the Front in time for the German Spring Offensive (21 March 1918) and involvement in the final Battles of the Hindenburg Line (September - October 1918) before his death in action on 10 November 1918. Together with an ms message of appreciation from Lieutenant Colonel F E Metcalfe, OC 7th Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment (1p, 7 November 1916); an ms letter of appreciation (1p, 12 October 1917) from Colonel A Bethell of the RFA; a ts letter (1p, 14 February 1919) from the War Office regarding his place of burial; a printed Roll of Honour, List of Casualties and List of Officers who served with the 75th Brigade RFA during August - November 1918 (15pp); a portrait photograph of him in uniform and a photo dated 1900 showing the three Giffard brothers with their family.
