Description: | Microfilm of his interesting account (178pp, written in 1935) recording his service as a Special Service Officer on the Intelligence Staff at G.H.Q., Indian Expeditionary Force 'D' in Mesopotamia, February 1915 - July 1918, including: leaving for Mesopotamia, newly commissioned, January 1915; the journey to Bombay, India, and then to Basra, Persia, January 1915 - February 1915; active service with G.H.Q at Basra, February 1915 - November 1915, notably the Battle of Shaibah, April 1915; the advance to Ctesiphon and the subequent retreat to Kut and then Basra, October 1915 - December 1915; Basra, December 1915 - October 1916, including leave in Dehra Dun, India, September 1916; the advance on and capture of Baghdad, October 1916 - March 1917; Baghdad, March 1917 - March 1918; and excavating archaeological sites at Eridu on the orders of the War Office, March 1918 - July 1918, when he returned to the UK; and commenting on the conditions; his pre-war service with the Inns of Court OTC; his duties; intelligence work; deporting suspected spies; interrogating prisoners; off-duty entertainment; the "business as usual" attitude in India and its contribution to the war effort; the local inhabitants; the disease; and his admiration of Generals Sir John Nixon and Sir Stanley Maude and Major-General W.H. Beach. Also included is his ts obituary (39 pp) from the proceedings of the British Academy describing his background, his career as an archaeologist and an Assyriologist at the British Museum, London, and Merton College, Oxford until his death in 1941, and his service during the First and Second World Wars.
