Description: | 14 ms letters (23pp) written by him to his parents in Melksham, Wiltshire while training with the 8th Battalion Wiltshire Regiment at Bovington, Dorset (cMay - June 1916) and 16 ms letters (18pp) following his posting to 1st Battalion Wiltshire Regiment in France (cJuly - September 1916) with notes on camp conditions and routines, his first impressions of France, his strong religious faith, and his hospitalisation, including a postcard written on his behalf the day before he died (September 1916); together with 25 ms letters of condolence to his sister and parents (September - October 1916), telegraph and letters from the War Office relating to his death (17pp), an ms notebook kept by his mother with extracts from his letters and her thoughts on subsequent anniversaries of his birthday and death (1916 - 1919), and an interesting ms letter from a local magistrate (April 1916) regarding the manner in which Harrold was escorted to Devizes following a mix-up in his call-up papers. Also with the collection is a ts transcription of extracts from the letters of A C Wootten (4pp), written to his sister during his service with 6th Battalion Wiltshire Regiment (January - November 1916) in France including brief notes on conditions, his experience in the trenches, conscientious objectors, and his return to the line following injury prior to his death on the Somme (November 1916).
