Description: | Very detailed ms diary in two volumes, with ts transcription (87pp and 86pp), covering his experiences during the periods August 1915 - June 1916 and July 1918 - May 1919 as an Anglican Chaplain to the Forces attached to the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force (MEF) at Gallipoli and on Lemnos and Malta; the British Salonika Force (BSF) in Salonika and Serbia; and the Egyptian Expeditionary Force (EEF) in Egypt and Palestine. Price was at this time Bishop of Fu Kien, China, and his diary contains references chiefly to the religious duties which he carried out around the Mediterranean included holding services and confirmations among the troops, while describing his embarkation and conditions on board the EMPRESS OF BRITAIN during the voyage out to Egypt (September - October 1915), his religious beliefs and those of his fellows, the morale of the soldiers whom he spoke with, visits to military hospitals and prisons, his opinion of Australian troops, visits to the Gallipoli Peninsula (October - November 1915) where he refers to the constant shelling, the dugouts and trenches, dining with General Birdwood, witnessing the shelling of the Peninsula from ships in Suvla Bay, and visits to sick and wounded soldiers; to Egypt (November 1915 - February 1916) including a trip to Malta (February - March 1916) where he describes recreational activities on the island; to Salonika (March - April 1916) where he refers to visits to the town and his consecration of war cemeteries; and return to Egypt (April - June 1916) where he recalls dining with Sir Archibald Murray. The second part of the diary opens with his embarkation for Salonika (August - October 1918) and descriptions of theatrical entertainment, his views on female impersonators and a visit to the frontline; then back to Egypt and Palestine (October - March 1918) where he indulged in much sightseeing, especially the places of religious importance in the Holy Land. Together with photocopies (4pp) of several newspaper cuttings including obituary notices for Bishop Price.
