Description: | Ms diary (42pp) written circa April 1918, describing his wounding while serving as a Private in an unknown regiment and subsequent hospitalisation on the Western Front, August 1917, and in the United Kingdom, September 1917 - January 1918; briefly describing conditions on the Ypres front and being wounded by a sniper, conditions in the Casualty Clearing Station near Poperinghe, journey by Red Cross train to Le Treport General Hospital, hospital routine including food, the hospital's orderlies, doctors and nurses, his wait to be sent back to Blighty, seeing American troops at the Le Havre docks (September 1917), his voyage on the hospital ship CARISBROOKE CASTLE to Southampton, the wartime role of the clergy and his religious beliefs, transfer to the Duchess of Connaught Red Cross Hospital at Taplow, Berkshire, and visits from the owner Lady Nancy Astor, his views on Canadian and Imperial troops, his treatment including x-rays, transfer to a VAD hospital in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire (October 1917) where he mentions recreational activities including football matches, concerts and cinema shows, visits to the home of Lord Lincolnshire and to Mrs Bayley-Gibson, Assistant Commandant of the VAD, 'National Intercession Day' and dealings with his pay. The diary contains poems entitled 'The Last Day in Hospital' and 'Our Nurse'.
