Description: | Ts transcription (48pp) of a memoir covering his services as a Lieutenant in the 1/5th Battalion King’s Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment) (83rd Brigade, 28th Division) on the Western Front, 1915 – 1918, describing his enlistment (November 1914) and training, embarkation on THE MANCHESTER IMPORTER, the voyage and arrival at Le Havre (15 February 1915), his duties, the journey to Baillieul (2 March 1915), the time spent in the trenches at Messines Ridge, being under attack by German shells, the weather conditions, arrival in Ypres (9 April 1915), the number of casualties and the destruction caused by the fighting, receiving wounds and evacuation back to Le Havre and embarkation on HM Hospital Ship ASTURIAS back to England, receiving his commission (August 1915) and billeting in Blackpool (16 October 1915) prior to embarkation on the HANTONIA and return to France (6 November 1915), his journey to Rouen and becoming a temporary Transport Officer to the 166th Infantry Brigade (8 February 1916). The memoir includes letters regarding his wounding (21 July 1917) and award of the Military Cross (21 August 1917) and two photocopies of photographs of him in uniform.
