Description: | Four ms pocket diaries for 1916 - 1919, with full daily entries, covering his passage from the United Kingdom to Egypt (January 1916), his service as a subaltern in the 1/1st Norfolk Yeomanry on garrison duty in Egypt in the Suez Canal zone (February - July 1916) and with the Western Frontier Force at Sollum (August 1916), his flying training with No 30 Squadron RFC during the campaign in Mesopotamia (December 1916 - March 1918), including reconnaissance, photographic and artillery observation flights, offensive patrols and bombing raids, in No 57 Training Squadron RAF in Egypt (May - June 1918), with No 45 Training Depot Station (TDS) in Gloucestershire (August - October 1918), No 19 TDS in Egypt (December 1918 - March 1919) and finally in Z Provisional Squadron in Egypt during the civil disturbances in that country (March - May 1919); together with a ts precis (17pp) of the diaries and ts transcripts (18pp) of some entries, his pilot's flying log book for December 1916 - May 1919, with a few entries for 1930 - 1941; his commission in the Norfolk Yeomanry (1915) and a Mention in Despatches certificate (1917). The diaries contain some useful details about what a young and reasonably affluent officer did on all his leaves.
