Description: | Microfilm copy of an ms diary (20 volumes) written while serving as a Corporal with the 1/4th Battalion Royal West Kent Regiment (Kent Brigade, Home Counties Division) training at Sandwich in the United Kingdom (September 1914 - November 1916), and then active service as a Sergeant with the 1st King George's Own Bengal Sappers and Miners, Royal Engineers in India (December 1916 - February 1917), describing the voyage to Bombay in the SS SOMALI via Port Said and Aden, his journey by troop train to Jubbulpore and details of life, conditions and his daily routine there, Brigade manoeuvres and battle training with the 5th Battalion Royal West Kent Regiment (February - March 1916), his promotion to Lance-Corporal, army education, Christmas celebrations, his journey to Subathu hill station (near Simla) (summer 1916), and promotion to Corporal; and then in Mesopotamia (February 1917 - April 1919) where he joins the Printing Section in Baghdad as a compositor, his duties including the printing of Reuters telegrams containing war news, describing the voyage to Basra, life in Baghdad and its people, the very high temperatures and resulting problems, his move to a new camp at Bagubah, a period of leave in India (April - June 1918), winter camp at Hambis (October 1918 - February 1919) and his journey home on board the SS THERMISTOCLES to be demobilised; together with 10 ms letters to his family, an ms letter describing a Zeppelin raid on Tunbridge Wells (14 October 1915) and other miscellaneous papers.
