Description: | 293 ms letters and cards (with 6 additional ts transcriptions and one photocopy) to his family written principally during his service in India with the 1st Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment (1910 - 1911) and with the 7th Hariana Lancers (April 1911 - February 1915) and then in Mesopotamia as the adjutant of the 7th Lancers (March - August 1915), in command of the signal troop attached to the 6th Cavalry Brigade (October 1915 - January 1917) and as a Staff Captain with the same Brigade (January - March 1917), with useful references to the life of an Army officer in India, especially sporting activities, the preparations for the Delhi Durbar (1911), his instruction at the cavalry school at Saugor (August 1913 - April 1914), conditions for the troops in Mesopotamia, operations there against hostile Arabs, his marriage during a long leave in India (August - October 1916) and graphic descriptions of the Battle of Shaiba (April 1915), the capture of Kut (September 1915), the Battle of Ctesiphon (November 1915) and the unavailing attempts to relieve the garrison in Kut (January - April 1916); also correspondence and other documents relating to his death in action near Baghdad in March 1917.
