Description: | Ts transcription of letters (16pp) and a diary (21pp) written during his military service as a junior officer with the 2nd Battalion Grenadier Guards (4th Guards Brigade, 2nd Division) on the Western Front, August - September 1914, describing his embarkation for France and the warm reception from the local population, the Battle of Mons and disheartening nature of the subsequent retreat, his low opinion of the French Army, the Battle of the Aisne in which he was wounded and almost captured by the Germans, and their food and living conditions; giving a good impression of the mobile warfare which characterised the early weeks of the war. Together with related documents including newspaper cuttings announcing his DSO (November 1916), Mention in Despatches (November 1916) and MC (September 1918) and an ms copy of a letter from Lord Cavan congratulating him on his DSO which was awarded as a result of his actions during the Battle of the Somme in September (2pp, 2 October 1916).
