Description: | 69 ms and ts letters, with transcriptions of 40 of them, written to his family in Yorkshire while serving with the 10th Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment in Dorset (February 1915) and covering his journey to the Dardanelles in the SS NORTHLAND (October - November 1915), then his experiences while on attachment to the 9th Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment (32nd Brigade, 11th Division) at Suvla and during the evacuation from the Dardanelles (December 1915), on Imbros (December 1915 - January 1916), in Egypt at Sidi Bishr near Alexandria and in the Canal Zone (February - June 1916) and on the Western Front (July - September 1916) with useful references to being under fire, his personal philosophy and attitude to other officers and men, conditions in the trenches and the Battle of Thiepval Ridge; also a notebook containing a ms account (99pp) of the taking of Stuff Redoubt during the Battle of Thiepval (September 1916), illustrated with sketch maps, a War Office telegram announcing his admission to hospital in September 1916, an incomplete essay (11pp) stressing the importance of treating mental as well as physical wounds and an undated letter to his mother about a magic lantern.
