Description: | Ms transcript (135pp) of a diary, September 1916 - December 1918, covering his service as a signaller in B Battery, 190 Brigade Royal Field Artillery (RFA) (41st Division), on the Somme (October 1916), in the Ypres sector, near Dickebusch (November 1916 - October 1917), in Italy (November 1917 - March 1918) and then briefly in the Ypres sector again at Vlamertinghe where he was gassed in May 1917; his experiences at No 2 Australian Hospital, No 25 General Hospital and No 12 Con Camp (May - August 1918) and at the base camp at Harfleur (August - October 1918); and his service with B Battery, 190 Brigade RFA (41st Division) again in the Ypres sector and to the east of Ypres (October - December 1918). Acklam was a teacher in civilian life and the diary is well-written, giving a good picture of the routine of a signaller in a RFA Battery at the front. It includes interesting comments on the poor quality of church services in France and drunkenness amongst the troops, and a reference to an incident in May 1918 when outraged New Zealand troops released a RFA gunner who was undergoing Field Punishment No 1.
