Lieutenant Colonel J R Webster DSO MC was an officer of the Sherwood Foresters during the First World War. He was
granted a temporary commission in the regiment in February 1915 and posted to the 1st Battalion in France. By the end of 1915, Webster had
risen to the rank of temporary Captain and was in command of D Company of the 1st Battalion. He was mentioned in despatches in June 1916,
wounded on the opening day of the Somme on 1 July 1916 and subsequently awarded the Military Cross. After recovering from his wound and
having seen further service, Webster was appointed to command the 16th Battalion of the Sherwood Foresters on 14 September 1917. He led the
battalion in the attack on Passchendaele Ridge later that month and was awarded the Distinguished Service Order and again mentioned in
despatches.
