Description: | Ts memoir (150pp) covering his early life in Glasgow and service during the First World War, including work in a shipyard 1914 - 1915 and his enlistment in the 3/7th Battalion Highland Light Infantry, October 1915. His work as an NCO Instructor with Reserve units of the HLI in Yorkshire is described until January 1917 when he served briefly in France with the 17th Battalion HLI (32nd Division); invalided with dysentery in March 1917, he remained in the United Kingdom until September when he returned to France with the 15th Battalion HLI (32nd Division), serving at Ypres (Passchendaele) where he describes the bad trench conditions until January 1918 when he was classed as unfit for front line service, and thereafter served with prisoner of war guard companies until demobilised in May 1919. The account includes impressions of the aftermath of the disturbances at Etaples in September 1917 and riots at Calais early in 1918.
