Description: | Ms memoir (105pp) written in 1989, with ts transcription (71pp), concerning his service as a Gunner with the Royal Marines, 5 November 1912 - 12 November 1916, describing the initial training he received at Chatham, his time patrolling the English Channel in HMS VENGENCES on the outbreak of the First World War and then how he participated in the Naval attacks on the Dardanelles Straits as well as the subsequent landings at Kum Kale (February - March 1915), his joining a Machine Gun Section in the trenches of the Gallipoli Peninsula (October 1915), his duties, the harsh experiences he faced on the battlefield until he was eventually evacuated in HMS PRINCE GEORGE (January 1916), also detailing the brief period he spent serving in Salonika (February 1916), his journey thereafter to France in HMS ARAGON, his billets and daily routine on the Western Front stationed near Amiens, making good references to the popular songs sung and slang words used in the trenches, ending with an account of the preparations taking place immediately before the final British attack as part of the Battle of the Somme (November 1916).
