Description: | 44 ms letters, October 1914 - February 1916, written to his mother whilst serving as a Captain (October 1914) and Major (December 1914) with the 2nd Battalion Middlesex Regiment (23rd Brigade, 8th Division) and as a Lieutenant Colonel (October 1915) with the 4th Battalion Middlesex Regiment (63rd Brigade, 21st Division) on the Western Front, describing embarking from Southampton for France (November 1914) and the journey to the front line, the problems caused by rain, mud and frost, the total devastation of towns and villages, returning to England in January 1915 to accompany a detachment of soldiers, rejoining his regiment in France for the Battle of Neuve Chapelle (March 1915) and the battalion's movements throughout the battle, receiving temporary promotion to Lieutenant Colonel and taking command of the 4th Battalion Middlesex Regiment (October 1915); together with 42 ms letters, March 1901 - November 1902, written to his parents whilst serving as a Lieutenant (March 1901) and a Captain (November 1901) with the Middlesex Regiment during the Boer War (1901 - 1902), describing the journey to Cape Town, being quarantined due to plague, commanding patrols and raiding parties in the search for Louis Botha in the Transvaal, the surrender of the Boers and the signing of the peace treaty (May 1902).
