Godwin, Beatrix Godwin, in August, 1888. Their honeymoon took them through the Loire area of France, where Whistler used the 34 grounded copper plates he had taken with him to capture views and buildings that appealed to him. The couple viewed a number of chateaux as well as travelling through the picturesque towns of Touraine. In this etching, Whistler has used small areas of incised lines to give shadow and depth to the image. The architecture is a good example of the French Renaissance period that Whistler was interested in. The etching plate for this work is also in the Hunterian collection (GLAHA 50471).
