Description: | Ms diary (123pp), with ts transcription (20pp), written during his service with the 67th Machine Gun Company, Machine Gun Corps in Salonika, July 1916 - June 1917, describing his voyage out to northern Greece and arrival in Salonika, his opinion of the town and its local populace, air raids by enemy aircraft, the state of his health including attacks of malaria and spells in hospital, his demotion after a disagreement with his CO, recreational activities such as concert parties, living conditions including food, gas attacks (March 1917) and aerial warfare. Together with a photograph of him in uniform alongside his wife and one of him in later life; a ts transcription (1p) of a letter written to him in January 1958 from a fellow soldier named Louis of the 7th Battalion Royal Fusiliers; copies of THE BALKAN NEWS for 3 December 1918 (2pp) and 10 May 1919 (4pp); and 11 souvenir postcards showing colourful cartoons of life in wartime Salonika.
