Description: | Ts transcription (42pp) of letters written home during his service as a Private with the 3rd Regiment, South African Infantry, April 1915 - May 1916, containing references to his service in South West Africa (April 1915); the rough conditions during his voyage to the United Kingdom (October 1915), time spent in Hampshire in training and the wait to be posted overseas, sightseeing in London, inspections by HM King George V and Lord Kitchener; his embarkation for Egypt (January 1916) and conditions during the voyage, life in Alexandria and their continued training, witnessing fighting around the Suez Canal zone (26 February 1916); and embarkation for France (April 1916) where he was killed on 15 July 1916. The transcript includes letters to his family written after his death by fellow soldiers and friends.
