Description: | Photocopy of an anecdotal ts memoir (168pp), possibly written in 1931, recording his service as an NCO with the 6th Battery of an unidentified Brigade RFA (147th Brigade, 49th Division) on the Western Front, August 1914 – 1917, covering his mobilisation, training at Doncaster and Sutton on Sea and embarkation, his first impressions of France, some notes on enemy activity including gas attacks, his rations and fatigues, the misery of serving in the mud of the trenches, his duties constructing fortifications during the Battle of the Somme (July 1916) and experiences during the attack on Thiepval, the poor health of the men, his disappointment on returning home on leave, his duties with the Brigade horses, the low morale, his duties on the guns around Neuve Chapelle and in action with tanks near Collincamps, working through tear gas attacks, comradeship among the men and casualties among their number, his participation in the Third Battle of Ypres and wounding in action, conditions at No 12 Casualty Clearing Station near Poperinghe and his hospitalisation in Bangor, Wales. Together with a poem written by him entitled 'Passchendaele' and a copy of a photograph showing him in uniform.
