Description: | Ms diary (31pp) and papers (8pp) from his military service in the 5th Battalion Wiltshire Regiment (40th Brigade, 13th Division), 1914 – 1917, detailing his voyage out to the Mediterranean and active service at Gallipoli (1915), providing a narrative of events immediately prior to the outbreak of war (July – August 1914) and a list of members of No 15 platoon of the 5th Wiltshires, describing his arrival at Avonworth Docks where he embarked on the FRANCONIA (30 June 1915), the ship and conditions during the voyage, their arrival at Malta (8 July 1915) where the local merchants sailed up to them in smaller boats selling goods to those onboard, arrival and disembarkation at Alexandria, Egypt (11 July 1915) before subsequent embarkation for Lemnos (14 July 1915) and in HMS SARINA to Gallipoli (3 August 1915), describing the landings and conditions in the trenches. Together with a certificate of protection from the Munitions Area Recruiting Office, notifications of wounding, a pass to be absent from quarters, a ts description (1p) of the sinking of SS FRANCONIA, four newspaper cuttings relating to and describing the failure of the Suvla Bay landing and 19 photographs showing him in uniform, with images of hospitals and hospital ships.
