Description: | Ms diary (40pp) of his service as a Lance-Corporal with 1st Battalion Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders (81st Brigade, 27th Division) mainly on the Western Front, between 16 October 1914 and 8 August 1916, describing in brief narrative entries, his embarkation and voyage home from India, October - November 1914, life in camp at Winchester, November - December 1914, but most particularly life in the trenches between December 1914 and April 1915 (when he was wounded and returned to Britain) through which runs the theme of the miseries of trench life (the mud, the cold, the wet and the constant digging) and the hardships of winter. There are no entries between 8 May and 29 September 1915, except for 25 June, and only very brief details of his time in Britain.
