Description: | Ms diaries (186pp in total) written during his service with the 88th Field Ambulance RAMC (29th Division), October 1915 - July 1917, covering his service at Gallipoli (October 1915 - January 1916), in Egypt (January - March 1916) and on the Western Front (March 1916 - July 1917) and describing his embarkation on HMT AQUITANIA for the Dardanelles, the intense Turkish shelling once he had landed on the Peninsula, the harsh storms at the end of 1915 and the evacuation of Gallipoli shortly afterwards; his arrival at Alexandria and first impressons of the city, daily life in Egypt and living conditions there; his voyage back to Marseilles, France and the stalemate situation on the Western Front, the intense artillery barrage preparatory to the Battle of the Somme (July 1916) and the high number of casualties resulting from the offensive, the use of poison gas, their move to the Ypres sector (August 1916), the devastation caused to the Flanders countryside (see 17 October 1916), back to the Somme (November 1916) and the Battle of Arras (April 1917).
