Description: | 9 very detailed ms diaries (768pp) kept during his service as a surgeon in the 2nd Field Ambulance (Royal Naval Division) (August 1914 - March 1917) and describing his medical duties in Gallipoli where he was stationed at Port Said, detailed reports of the 1st and 2nd Battles of Krithia (April - May 1915), the counterattack at Eski-Hissarlik (May 1915), his work on the island of Imbros where he reported that men were suffering from shock due to the smells of the trenches (July - November 1915), the landings at Suvla Bay and the Battle for Hill 60 (August 1915) and a lengthy explanation of his opinion that the entire Gallipoli campaign was a failure, his hospitalisation and recovery at a convalescent home in Egypt (November - December 1916), his move to a medical camp in Egypt (December 1916), the flight he took from Stavros to the HMS ARK ROYAL, piloted by Sir Sholto Douglas (April 1916), his work in a hospital with the Egyptian Labour Forces (May - April 1916), the journey to France (May - June 1916), his work around the battlefields of the Somme (June - November 1916), his concern that all RND medical divisions would be taken over by the Army, notes made on the transport of ambulances and the care of the horses (December 1916 - March 1917) as well as his pride at being awarded the Military Cross (January 1917). These diaries are also notable for the numerous sketches Sparrow made of his acquaintances, commanding officers, natural surroundings and various incidences that he found humorous.
