Description: | Papers of the Pioneer Theatre Society Ltd. (1946-1952) are contained in one file and include correspondence, papers, rules and programmes for the Unity Theatre. The Pioneer Theatre Society grew out of the working-class group, The Harrow Cooperative Players, and was initiated at a founding conference in 1944. In 1947 Reginald Bridgeman was elected as its president. The aim of the Society was to promote art as a truthful interpretation of life as experienced by the majority of people to "move people to work for the betterment of society". The producers, actors, technicians and administrative staff were drawn from the ranks of the trade unions, cooperative societies and progressive political parties. In 1952 it was disbanded as a result of financial difficulties; Catalogues and lists are available in the Library and the National Register of Archives; copies of which are also available on-line via the the World Wide Web. Card indexes arranged by person and place are available in the Archives Reading Room, as is a card catalogue of the Theatre Playbills. The playbills are listed on the Brynmor Jones Library Main catalogue, also available on the Web.
