Description: | The papers of Major O A Forsyth-Major contain manuscripts for several comic plays and farces, including: 'Bogart's Brood', 'The Boomerang', 'Charles Rex', 'Cupid and the Myth', 'Dick Turpin', 'Downing Street', 'Escape to Happiness', 'The Fortune Hunters', 'The Georgians', 'Hannibal', 'The Merry Wives of Mayfair', and others. All the plays were written by Major Forsyth-Major under the noms-de-plume Jon, Don & Guy Beverley, Barry & Hector Macdonald, Ivor McIvor, Ian Mac, Randalph Major, and Maxim Major. There are also letters among the general correspondence from The Old Vic Theatre, The Royal Shakespeare Theatre, The Oxford Playhouse and the Oxford University Experimental Theatre regarding his efforts to have his plays produced. Forsyth-Major's papers also contain post-cards and correspondence from George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950) relating to various matters including lectures to be given by Shaw; The Fabians Society; a review and criticism of Forsyth-Major's play 'The Merry Wives of Mayfair', and Shaw's involvement in the building of a national theatre. There are also a number of photographs of George Bernard Shaw and his wife from the 1930s and 40s.; Catalogues and lists are available in the Library and the National Register of Archives; copies of which are also available on-line via the the World Wide Web. Card indexes arranged by person and place are available in the Archives Reading Room, as is a card catalogue of the Theatre Playbills. The playbills are listed on the Brynmor Jones Library Main catalogue, also available on the Web.
