Description: | A collection of about 6,000 playbills and an unnumbered much smaller collection of programmes, posters and related newspaper cuttings mainly from Hull theatres, although including some from other Yorkshire towns and cities, from India and South Africa. By far the largest collection of playbills are from the Theatre Royal Hull which was granted a royal patent in 1769. The Theatre Royal was part of the so-called 'York Circuit' which consisted of the York, Hull, Leeds, Wakefield, Doncaster and Pontefract Theatres (there are examples from each of these). The circuit was later reduced to York, Hull and Leeds and it was at this time that Thomas Sheppard suggests they were 'second only to the great national theatre in Drury Lane, London'. Other smaller collections include those of the Queen's Theatre and Royal Clarence Theatre, whose previous names include the Minor Theatre, Summer Theatre and Sans Pareil. Later playbills (mainly twentieth century) are from the Alexandra Theatre, The Grand Theatre and Opera House and the New Theatre which is still in existence today. Playbills date from the late eighteenth century to the 1970s.; Catalogues and lists are available in the Library and the National Register of Archives; copies of which are also available on-line via the the World Wide Web. Card indexes arranged by person and place are available in the Archives Reading Room, as is a card catalogue of the Theatre Playbills. The playbills are listed on the Brynmor Jones Library Main catalogue, also available on the Web.
Publications include the pamphlet 'Literary Manuscripts and Archives' (1996), which is also available on the web site. R. Pyle and R Johnson, "Sweeping the dust from the boards: dramatic pieces', Paragon Review, No. 5 1997, pp.7-10.
