Description: | Gilded reeded, 33.0 x 38.9 x 5.5 s. with butterfly; b.r. CRE WHISTLER, James McNeill; (American; 1834-1903) Whistler married Beatrix Godwin in 1888, and this tiny panel was painted during their honeymoon in Brittany in the autumn of that year. Although it was painted with a fine brush, the small scale of the panel gives the effect of broad brushstrokes. The oil paint has been thinned down and is used by Whistler in a similar way to watercolour.
