Description: | Microfilm copy of 39 ms letters from 4 correspondents comprising: 5 good letters from Lieutenant Colonel W H Diggle, December 1914 - January 1916, whilst serving as a Staff Officer first at HQ 8th Division, then HQ VIII Corps in Gallipoli and finally HQ 156th Brigade (52nd Division) including interesting descriptions of conditions on the Western Front and Gallipoli, the 1914 Christmas Truce, the failure of Gallipoli and the Suvla landing in particular, the evacuation of Helles and his attitude to both his German and Turkish enemies; 11 letters from Captain E S Chance serving with the 2nd (Queen's Bays) Dragoon Guards (1st Cavalry Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division) on the Western Front, August 1914 - December 1916, including references to the Second Battle of Ypres and the German gas attack there; 8 letters from Captain A P W Rickman serving first (July 1915 - April 1916) with the 5th Battalion Royal Berkshire Regiment (35th Brigade, 12th Division) and after with the 8th Battalion (1st Brigade, 1st Division) including good descriptions of the former's introduction into the line; and 15 interesting letters from Major D G T Sneyd serving first (November 1914 - February 1915) with the 110th Heavy Battery RGA and after (May 1915 - November 1916) the 8th Siege Battery RGA, including an interesting picture of the War Office in August 1914, numerous good and sympathetic descriptions of civilian life within German shell-fire range, of aeroplane activity, his men and his life-style, contrasting that in the line with leave at home in England, several very close escapes from shells, the winning of the VC by Lance-Corporal Angus, the increasing nervous strain on him and a women's demonstration in Berlin broken up by machine-guns, together with 2 ms letters from Private H Clarke to Miss Noble's mother, the first from the Western Front with an unidentified unit, the second from the Andaman Islands in the Bay of Bengal whilst serving with the 18th (London) Battalion the Rifle Brigade
