Description: | The Special Collections Department Theatre Collection comprises of press cuttings of reviews, programmes, playbills and other ephemera relating to c.8000 plays performed mostly at theatres in London, Birmingham and Stratford-upon-Avon, dated 1918-1970.
The Collection also contains the literary, personal and business papers of Charles Watson Mill, 1910-1934. Letters, c.400, to John Ramsay Allardyce Nicoll (1894-1976), Professor of English Language and Literature at the University of Birmingham, 1945-1961, and to his first wife, many from actors and theatre directors including Shaw, Auden, Alfred Hitchcock, Sir John Gielgud, Sir Barry Jackson and Dame Laura Knight. There are also bound volumes of theatre playbills and programmes including Bridgnorth playbills dated 1822-1884, Haymarket Theatre London playbills dated 1846-1847, London and Kent theatre programmes dated 1870-1915, Birmingham playbills dated 1795-1876. The collection also contains letters and papers, c.70, of Benjamin Nottingham Webster (1797-1882).; There is an online catalogue available. There is a separate card index to titles and playwrights for the theatre collection, handlists/catalogues to other collections and a general name index on card.
