Description: | Photocopy (87pp) of an illustrated ts memoir covering his whole life, but with particular reference to his First World War experiences while serving with the 2nd (Home Counties) Brigade RFA in the United Kingdom, 1914 - February 1916, describing the recruitment drive on the outbreak of war; then on active service with the 21st Brigade RFA based at Ferozepore, India, March 1916 - ?spring 1917, where he refers to his voyage out via Suez, a period spent at Dalhousie Hill Station, training exercises and relations with Indian civilians; with an ammunition column in Mesopotamia, ?spring - December 1917, mentioning life in Baghdad, his wounding by shrapnel (July 1917) while near Ramadi and treatment in various hospitals at Al Fallujah, Baghdad, Basra and Amara including journeys by hospital barge, a voyage to hospital in Bombay in HMHS VARSOVA before his evacuation in HMHS LLANDOVERY CASTLE back to the UK, describing the ship stopping in Egypt to receive wounded from the Palestine campaign (December 1917); and then with an unidentified RFA Brigade on the Western Front, April - December 1918, describing religious services held in France and visits to Cambrai, the Armistice announcement and soldier's riots over demobilisation. The memoir also includes a short account of his experiences during the Second World War, when he served as an ARP Warden and describes the bombing in Bexhill-on-Sea, Sussex.
