Description: | Photocopy (106pp) of a ms diary kept during his service with the 8th Light Horse Regiment AIF at Gallipoli, March 1915 - August 1916, describing his embarkation from Alexandria, Egypt in overcrowded conditions onboard the SS MENOMINEE, his landing on the Gallipoli peninsula on 21 May 1915 and the constant shellfire from both sides, armistices to bury the dead, trench warfare, rumours about Turkey asking for peace terms, the poor hygiene and lack of washing facilities, receiving mail from home and the problems of military censorship, casualties within his unit, and news of the Suvla Bay landings (6 August 1915); the diary ends with his evacuation suffering from Dysentery and hospitalisation in Egypt (September - November 1915) and his voyage home from Alexandria to Melbourne, Australia, recording recreational activities during the journey (December 1915 - January 1916).
